Depth Psychology Blog Glossary of Terms

Depth Psychology

A branch of psychology that investigates, researches, and seeks understanding of the unconscious psyche and how it relates to conscious, everyday life.

It includes consideration of patterns, feelings, resistances, instincts, impulses, fantasies, dreams, and recurring themes. The branches of psychotherapy labeled psychodynamic and analytical both fall under the umbrella of depth psychology, and are discussed in this depth psychology blog. These two types of psychotherapy have been proven effective through high-quality research. https://www.cgjungcenter.org/clinical-services/what-is-depth-psychology/

Jungian Psychotherapy

Also called analytical psychology. This is a type of depth psychotherapy based on the concepts developed by the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung.

In a broad sense, it also includes post-Jungian concepts that have grown out of Jung’s original writings. A hallmark of Jung’s orientation is that the need for meaning in life propels many human endeavors. Another major element is that a dialog between the conscious and unconscious sides of a person can provide access to what Jung called the Self, a constructive core of the psyche that propels creative and positive development of the person’s potential. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapy-types/jungian-therapy

Individuation

The essence of the self-development process in Jungian psychotherapy.

This is the cornerstone of Jungian therapy. It involves the actualization of a person’s true potential. The process is driven by an innermost core of the psyche that’s wiser than the ego and knows the person’s gifts.

Projection

A psychological phenomenon in which a person sees an aspect of his or her own psychology as a person in the everyday world.

This propels misunderstanding and relationship problems, and is usually accompanied by denial. This depth psychology blog includes a series of posts on projection.

Unconsious Mind

The part of an individual’s psyche outside her or his awareness.

This can include hidden talents, unrecognized destructive elements, complexes, and reserves of energy.
